Crime Numbers
The Crimes Analysis Unit of the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection collates crime statistics for all counties in the State of Connecticut. The Unit’s latest crime reports shows that Middlesex County recorded 217 violent crimes and 2,366 property crimes in 2017. When compared to 2013 crime data for the county, both violent crime and property crime rates fell by 13.8% and 17% respectively.
A breakdown of the 2017 crime statistics shows that the county recorded 1 murder, 22 rapes, 28 robberies, 136 aggravated assaults, 232 burglaries, 1,492 larcenies, 331 motor vehicle thefts, and 3 arsons.
The most recent five-year crime trend for Middlesex County indicates that the only crime to experience an uptick between 2013 and 2017 is motor vehicle theft (9.7%). In the same period, rape rate remained unchanged for the county while other Part I crimes declined: murder (50%), robbery (42.9%), aggravated assaults (5.6%), burglary (41.3%), larceny (13.3%), and arson (91.4%).
Criminal Records
Criminal history records for Middlesex County are provided by the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) of the State Police Bureau of Identification (SPBI). The SPBI provides three types of criminal history checks: name-based, fingerprint-based, and a simple search that confirmed the existence of a criminal record. A request for confirmation of criminal record costs $36, while the fee is $75 for a name-based check or a fingerprint-based search.

Police reports for Middlesex County are provided by the various police departments in the cities, boroughs, and towns of the county. For example, police reports for the City of Middletown, the largest city in Middlesex County is provided by the Middletown Police Department. A certified copy of this record costs $1 for the first page and 50 cents for each additional page.

Court records
The Middlesex County judicial system is made up of two major courts. The Superior Court with general jurisdiction over civil and criminal matters, and the Probate Courts with exclusive jurisdiction over cases of wills, estate, probate, trusts, and adoptions. The Middletown Probate Court serves Cromwell, Durham, Middlefield, and Middletown. While the Saybrook Probate Court serves Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Saybrook, Saybrook, and Westbrook.
Middlesex County court records can be viewed on the Connecticut Judicial Branch online database. Visit either the Superior Court Case Look-up page or the Connecticut Probate Courts Case Lookup site to view the records of both courts in the county. To request certified copies of Middlesex County court records, contact the Clerk’s Office in the court where the case was held. The fee for copies of court records is $1 per page.
Vital Records
Middlesex County divorce or dissolution of civil union records are maintained by the Family Division of the Superior Court. To obtain certified copies of these records, contact the Chief Clerk's Office at the Middlesex County courthouse. The office is open from Monday through Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The Clerk will require the divorce case name and docket number to locate the divorce record. A certified copy of a divorce record costs $25.
Connecticut State Department of Public Health maintains marriage, birth, and death records for all counties in the state. Marriage and death records cost $20 per copy while birth records cost $30 per copy. To obtain certified copies of one of these records from the state Vital Records Office, download and complete the right application for marriage, birth, or death certificate.
