Crime Numbers

Hartford County recorded a total of 23,304 crimes in 2017, the most recent year with a complete set of crime data. Compared to 2013 figures, overall crime rate for the county rose by a modest 1.7%. A breakdown of 2017 violent crime data indicates that there were 40 murders, 226 rapes, 864 robberies, and 1,262 aggravated assaults. In the same year, incidences of property crimes include 2,770 burglaries, 15,832 larcenies, 2,310 motor vehicle thefts, and 191 arsons.

The five-year crime trend for Hartford County shows that murder (21.2%), rape (21.5%),larceny (4.5%), motor vehicle theft (46.5%), and arson (109.9%) rates increased between 2013 and 2017. On the other hand, the county recorded fewer cases of robbery (13.6%), aggravated assault (1.4%), and burglary (24.9%) in the same period.

The county is home to three cities: Bristol, New Britain, and Hartford (the state capital) as well as 27 towns. The Records Division is open to the public on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. It’s unavailable on Mondays and Sundays and open on Thursdays between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Call the Records Division at (860) 757-4150 to ask for the availability of the police report you want. However, the fee for each certified copy of a police report is $5 while a CD containing police photos is $10. Each background record check attracts a charge of $15. All fees only payable in cash.

The Vital Records Office of the Connecticut Department of Health provides copies of other vital records such as birth, death, marriage, and civil union certificates.
