Crime Numbers
Connecticut’s Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) publishes annual crime reports for all the counties in the state. Its latest reports show that New London County recorded 2 murders, 16 rapes, 30 robberies, and 26 aggravated assaults in 2021. In that year, recorded incidents of property crimes include 62 burglaries, 332 larcenies, and 4 motor vehicle thefts.
In the period between 2012 and 2016, murder and rape rates increased by 25% and 33.3% respectively in New London County. The county’s five-year crime trend also reveals rising larceny-theft (9.3%) and motor vehicle theft (67.2%) rates. However, in the same period, it recorded fewer robberies (34%), aggravated assault (68.2), and burglaries (58.5%), and arsons (67.7%).
Criminal Records
The New London Police Department provides local background checks for the county. The criminal records provided cover the past ten years. To obtain a local background check, download and fill a Criminal History Conviction Information Request Form. Maiden names, aliases, and any other names of the person whose criminal history is being checked must be provided on the form, in order to obtain a complete criminal history report.
The fee for each criminal background check is $20, payable by a check or money order made out to the City of New London. The fee can also be paid in cash when requesting a background check in person. Submit the completed form by mail or in-person to:

The Record Section of the New London Police Department keeps records of an incident and accident reports for the county and makes them available on request. To request a copy of an incident or accident report, simply download and fill a Report Request Form from their website. Submit the completed form by email or in person. Each police report costs 50 cents per page. There is an additional $5 mailing fee. The Police Department accepts checks and money orders, made payable to the City of New London, for these fees.
When submitting a request for an incident or accident report in person, visit the Record Section office anytime from Monday through Friday between 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection maintains a central database of registered sex offenders in Connecticut and makes this registry available to the public. Visit the State of Connecticut Sex Offender Registry to search for registered sex offenders living in New London County. Search this database by name, street address, city name, and zip code to locate registered sex offenders in the county.

Vital Records
Divorce records for New London County are available from the Judicial District Clerk’s Office. To obtain copies of a divorce record, contact the Clerk’s Office in the Judicial District Court where the case was heard. The Clerk’s Office will require a case name and a docket number to locate the right records and make copies of a divorce decree or Judgement File. The fee for copies of divorce records is $1 per page. Certified copies cost an additional $2 per record.
The Connecticut Department of Health provides vital records for the counties in the state through its Vital Records Office. The public can obtain marriage, civil union, birth, and death certificates from this office. These vital records are also available from the various Vital Statistics, Town Clerk, and City Clerk offices in the county. Check the Connecticut Vital Records Directory to find locations situated in New London County.
The certificates can be requested by mail and in person. To request for one, download and complete a Birth (State and Town), Death (State and Town), or Marriage (State and Town) Record form. While the State Vital Records Office charges $30, $20, and $20 respectively for birth, death, and marriage certificate, Town/City Vital Records offices charge $20 ($15 for each additional copy of birth record) for each copy of these vital records.
When requesting these vital records by mail, enclose a postal money order for the fee and a valid ID with the completed application. Make the money order payable to Treasurer, State of CT when requesting a vital record from the State Vital Records Office. Check with the Town or City Clerk’s Office when requesting vital records for a New London County municipality.
